Rub a dub dub!

I'm sorry I haven't posted in a while, As I have been very busy. :)

Bath time is optional, But I do it once a month because sometimes they get a little stinky. And also rats have very lightly tinted red spit (It looks clear). Anyways if your rat has some white on it, eventually it will get a little reddish after a few months in the place they lick the most. (which is usually on there back with most rats). what I yousually do is just turn on the sink not have just be like not to fast not to slow (average). Then make sure it is lukewarm, And you should use small animal shampoo or tearless gentle dog shampoo. If you decide to use dog shampoo make sure that it doesn't have any flea killing chemicals as it can be poisonus to rats. Then what I do it I get them wet make sure you clean the tail, Base to tip. And then I put a dime sized amount of shampoo on them I scrub them up and then wash it of. MAKE SURE that you do not get any water in there ears, Its better to just not wash the head. And then I wrap them up in a towel and wait till they dry of.

P.P.S, Rats will sometimes poop when there scared or even squeak. Usually then if there are like screaming its better to just better to avoid bath time, but if there are just fear pooping you can still give them a bath, (One of my rats used to fear poop). The first time is usually the worse. On the other hand some rats just LOVE baths. :) My rats don't mind baths any more, They just have to get used to bath time.

Cutting nails

You can usually get your veterinarian to cut your rats nails or you can learn how to do it yourself. There are all different videos online on how to do it. But I will tell you how to do it right now.

1. You need your rat(s) to sit still; the way you can do that is by bribing them with oats!
2. You will need a pair of nail clippers (you only need human ones but get a new one for your rats, but only use them on your rats, as there can be bacteria in human and rat nails)

3. Cut them! Make sure you just cut the white part off and not any of the pink (that's the quick)

4. You should probably cut your rats nails about once a month. make sure you remember because it can be very uncomfortable for your rat(s)!

It is very rare for rats to have dark colored hands/paws but if your rat(s) do, make sure you just cut of the tiniest bit and do it more frequently, about every other week.

Treats

As you probably know there are all different kinds of treats at the petstore for your rats. But, if you are only getting the treats so you can teach them tricks that can be expensive. So i am going to make a list of things that are cheap or already in your house! :)

1. Plain oats are really good as treats! they are healthy, they are so cheap, and they are bite sized for your rats! Oats are perfect to teach them tricks or just to give them a treat once in a while.
2. Dog biscuits are cheap, you may already have them at your house if you have a dog. And its also good to keep there teeth down.
3. I have my own special treat recipe that I invented myself, I will make an article about that very soon! :) You should not give your rats these following things, 1. Milk, rats are actually lactose intolerant so no dairy products which means no yogies! ( in my nutrition article there is a list of foods they can not have.
4. You can also just buy all of those treats u can get from the pet store Just make sure they have no Milk, Alfalfa ( rats cant digest alfalfa ) and corn.

Water

You need to get your rat(s) a good sized water bottle you can usually no ALWAYS find one at a petstore or online. Its better to get a big water bottle because rats tend to backwash. So depending on however many rats, probably 2oz per rat is how big your water bottle should be. And remember to give your rats fresh water and clean there water bottle every day, the way you can clean the water bottle is use a Q-tip and stick it up the spout because bacteria can build there.

Toys!

One of rats necessities are toys! there are all different kinds of toys out there. I would recommend  your local pet shop, petsmart/petco, amazon.com, viovet, and drfosterandsmith.

1. first you will need to get them 1+ hides, they prefer 2 or more though.
2. You need to get them 3 different things to chew on, there are all different chew toys out there. in my cage they have a wood chews, cardboard,and a small rawhide. (Tip) make sure the rawhide you buy is made in U.S.A!
3. Hammocks, if you have a large cage like a critter nation cage or a prevue hendryx you HAVE to have hammocks if you have a sewing machine or at least a needle and thread you can make hammock(s) out of fleece, rather than spending alot of money buying one.
4. In the petstore there isn't really a specific aisle for rats so usually you will use bird and ferret toys and other rodent stuff. you are probably also going to want to get bird ladders, and different toys with little bells and stuff, and different ferret stuff. you can also get ferret tubes and tug toys. Rats also really like cat wands!
5. Go Wild! Buy what every toy that catches your eye, fits your budget, and most of all fits your cage!
